My POV by Brian A. Wilson
You: The New Software
I went to the DV Expo at the L.A. Convention Center today.
To say the least, it was overwhelming. The speed at which technology advances stuns the senses. What one is able to create at one's desk is something few of us could have imagined even five years ago.
For you budding indy filmmakers out there, you'll be happy to know the fine folks at Apple have introduced Final Cut Pro 3.0. Read about it at apple.com or versiontracker.com. It's astounding, powerful software.
Companies spend millions to keep their products up-to-date by keeping them running the latest software.
What kind of software are YOU running?
By that, I don't mean the software in your computer. I mean the software in YOU.
What do you do to keep yourself fresh?
At some point, it's easy to feel like you've read all the books and taken all the classes and attended all the seminars. You can start to feel like there's nothing left to learn.
Don't give in to that feeling. Instead, get out there and find a way to enhance your writing skills-the software of your mind and heart.
Me, I'm taking Robert McKee's Comedy seminar this weekend. It's Sunday, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Do I want to miss a day of my beloved pro football? No. Do I want to spend the day holed up like some Taliban freak? Not a chance. Do I want to blow my weekend on another seminar, after spending LAST weekend at one? Ha!
But do I want my screenwriting skills to diminish, or do I want to not have in my arsenal a tool I might need to make my script just a teench better?
I want the latter least of all.
The only thing any of us can do is to keep learning, keep moving and keep applying our skills, using the latest software to run the machinery of our beings.
So get out there, find a way to recharge yourself, upgrade your abilities, and as always--
Keep writing.
