FREE/CHEAP EVENTS, FREE SHIRT

There may not be any free lunches in Hollywood, but there are free events and almost-free events. And a free t-shirt. Read on.

SHOWBIZ EXPO
Showbiz Expo arrives in June. This annual trade show for the industry is geared mainly to below-the-line folks, that is, the people who do all the hard work of movie-making! But no matter which side of the line you're on, you're sure to enjoy SBE.

They'll have about 300 exhibitors showing off the latest and greatest cranes, dollies, lights, cameras, software and visual effects. They have booths from film commissions, rental houses, studios and post-production facilities. Final Draft is always there, with low, show-only prices on software.

SBE has conferences you can pay to attend, if you're just not sure what to do with all that spare money. In addition, they have three free, free, free seminars that sound very good: "Runaway Production," "The Future of Entertainment" and a conversation with John Toll, ASC, who won the golden boy for "Braveheart."

And the show will have lots and lots of free stuff! This is the place to come to get your year's supply of pens, pencils, notepads, lanyards, fridge magnets and sticky notes, all emblazoned with swell logos that are sure to leave you feeling like an industry insider.

REGISTER BEFORE MAY 20 to get in free! It's June 1-3 at the LA Convention Center. Register online at www.showbizexpo.com

ACADEMY'S DIAMOND CELEBRATION
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Oscar folks, are putting on a spectacular event. To commemorate the Acad's 75th anniversary, they're running all 75 best picture winners, in order, at the Academy's theater. They run on mostly consecutive Monday nights, starting next week. Tickets are $5 per movie, or you can buy the Diamond pass for $75! That's right. Seventy-five movies, seventy-five bucks. All screened in the best theater in the world, period. That's a helluva deal. See www.ampas.org for details.

AND NOW, SOMETHING TRULY FREE
Just to show you how much I appreciate your reading my column, I'm giving away a free t-shirt. Yes, free. From Hollywood. Amazing as it sounds, it's true. I'll pay the postage, you get a handsome, brand-spanking-new shirt featuring the Words Into Pictures logo. Retail value, possibly into the hundreds of dollars.

Well twenty bucks, anyway.

All you have to do is be the first person to send an email to me with:
1. the correct dates for the WIP seminar, and
2. the name of your favorite comedy movie of all time and a brief statement (one sentence or so) saying why it's your fav.

Send that to me at transtexan@hotmail.com

I'll send an email back to the winner requesting snail mailing info.

That's it! Be first, get a free shirt.

(And if you have trouble figuring out that seminar date, check out www.wip.org)

Thanks for reading.

Keep writing
