AGENTS AND MANAGERS, FINAL ROUND-UP

It seems only fitting to end my discourse on agents and managers on a day when the paper reports that our stalwart Burbank cops slapped the cuffs on agent Marcie Wright of The Wright Concept.

Ms. Wright, it is alleged, neglected to fork over payments for scripts she'd sold to the writer for whom she worked. Fraud, claims he. Accounting error, claims she.

She's now forced to spout the Enron/WorldCom/Tyco defense: I'm not a crook, I'm just an igmo.

Well, we do only pay them 10%, and I guess you get what you pay for.

What a biz.

Let me end with a few words from the proverbial mouths of the horses, the race horses that are running laps and chalking up victories on the Hollywood race track.

Cliff Roberts, agent, WMA, on finding an agent: "It's like love: it only takes one. You don't have to get 40 people to like your work."

Jordan Bayer, agent, Original Artists: "Your screenplay is a sales tool, a sample. Write it so that when people read it, they'll say ?This is someone we need to know!'"

Wendi Niad, manager. Her advice? "Avoid agents at all costs!"

Michael Robins, agent. "Be aggressive, but be politely aggressive."

Brad Rosenfeld, Preferred Artists, agent. "It's a concept business. To break through the ceiling or the brick wall, you need a concept script."

Jason Dravis, Monteiro-Rose Agency, agent. "Why do we sign someone? It's in the writing. It's the material. Whether it's comedy or drama, he can write. It's in the execution."

Josh Donen, CAA, agent. "If you persist with it, someone will spark to something. Just have to keep going."

My thanks to all the agents and managers with whom I met.

I hope their information motivates, informs and inspires you as it did me.

Any questions? Email me.

Keep writing.
