My POV Brian A. Wilson
WINNERS and GO FOR OSCAR GOLD
Congrats to the three winners who were the first to respond to last week's trivia question. By knowing who wrote Dr. Strangelove (Stanley Kubrick, Terry Southern and Peter George, based on the latter's novel), the following faithful readers won the corresponding fab prizes.
Sydney H. of Santa Monica, the grand prize winner of Stuart Voytilla's "Myth and the Movies," a fine tome with a cover price of nigh onto 27 bucks.
John Z. of Hazel Park, MI, recipient of Dennis Palumbo's "Writing from the Inside Out," which sounds messy but is actually quite good for you.
John H. of St. Louis, a handsome, spooky, Phantom of the Opera pencil, possibly a collector's item, but probably not.
Careful readers may be thinking, "Hey, nobody said there were THREE prizes up for grabs." Well, there weren't. But I think effort should be rewarded in this biz, so I scared up a couple extra prizes for the fast responders.
If you didn't score anything this time, fear not. I'll be having more giveaways in the future. As they say, watch this space for details.
If you would like to see prizes of a different sort, plan now to see the Academy's next exhibit. To quote the press release, "In honor of Oscar's 75th anniversary, the Academy will be mounting a spectacular new installation that brings together 100 Oscars in a glittering display that covers all 75 years of Oscar's history."
There will be at least one Oscar from each year. You can see the gold hoisted by Frances Marion (writer, "The Big House"), Katharine Hepburn, Frank Capra, Jimmy Stewart, Orson Welles and Emma Thompson (writer, "Sense and Sensibility").
Admission is free and open to the public. Academy Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from noon to 6 p.m. Closed Monday. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. For more program information, please call (310) 247-3600, or visit www.oscars.org
If you live here in LA, it's a must-see exhibit. If you live elsewhere, well, swing through town on vacation or to attend a seminar. Go. Admire, and imagine the hard work, perseverance and total human effort it took to win 100 Oscars. Then envision yourself hoisting one of your very own.
That should be enough inspiration to get you through winter! Keep writing, BW LA
