TWO INTERESTING CLASSES
Here's the scoop on a couple of interesting classes. See below for a discount.
No, they're not screenwriting classes per se, but one can help your writing and the other can help your career.
First up is "COPS, CRIMINALS, EVIDENCE, AND CRIME SCENE PROCEDURES FOR THE WRITER'S CRAFT."
This one-day seminar features retired Detective/Master Officer Mary A. Boyd, Arlington, Virginia Police Department, a trainer of Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators; and George Durgin Jr., a retired Homicide Detective and former Director of Forensic Pathology for the Orange County Coroner's Office.
The main topics of discussion will include crime scene collection/preservation, forensic laboratories, homicide investigations, autopsies, courtroom justice systems, women in law enforcement, multi-jurisdictional task forces, arson, sexual assault, firearms, interview techniques, diplomatic exemptions and espionage.
That takes place on Saturday, March 29, 2003, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM at the Beverly Garland Hotel in NoHo.
While I haven't taken this particular course, I've taken one like it, and found it invaluable. The knowledge you gain gives your writing the authenticity it needs. Getting to know cops in this setting helps you create more realistic police figures on the page. And after you hear a few crime scene stories, you'll realize that struggling with an adjective or hammering brads on a script ain't such a bad way to make a living.
The second class is THE PRODUCERS BUSINESS MASTER CLASS, presented by John Lee, CEO, Entertainment Business Group and author of THE PRODUCERS BUSINESS HANDBOOK.
This intensive two-day course runs Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26, also at Beverly Garland. Registration is $250.
My producer wife took this class and recommends it highly. If you're interested in producing what you've written, but aren't sure how to go about it, this course will give you a detailed plan.
It does an excellent job of demystifying the business side of the biz. Not exactly heartwarming or perky material, but if you want to be a filmmaker, you should know the info that Lee presents.
For more info on either course or to register, go to www.cinemaartsandtech.com.
SPECIAL SUPER-DUPER BONUS: Tell ?em you heard about the classes in this column and you'll get a $50 discount.
