My POV Brian A. Wilson
THREE CHEERS FOR MICHAEL MOORE
Well, the war began and the Oscars ended. Too bad both productions couldn't be over in four hours.
Both events turned out to be noisy affairs, the war in Iraq due to somewhat shocking and vaguely awesome military might, and the Oscars due to those who felt obliged to hoot down Michael Moore during his Oscar speech.
I say three cheers for Michael, and shame on the lowlifes booing him.
The man earned his spot on the stage. He won the Oscar. With that comes the chance to speak your peace, at least for the 37 seconds you get before the microphone dissolves into the stage and they start playing "Stormy Weather."
I think it's sad that some loudmouth(s) had to yell over Michael. There's been plenty of controversy from the podium before. My thought is, YOU win the Oscar, then YOU can get up there and give YOUR point of view.
I did find it interesting that the ever-conservative Academy didn't cut away to the audience, so we could judge for ourselves who and how many attendees were booing, and how many were standing and/or clapping.
I met Michael. He seems like a nice guy. He seems very pro-American. He just thinks there's maybe more than one way to get things done in the world, and he chose to share that view with an audience assembled to honor him.
Isn't that what this war is for? Isn't that what documentary filmmaking is for? And isn't that what the Oscars are for?
Here's to Michael, and the filmmakers out there with the guts to air their views and the power to make us think.
