NO REST FOR THE WRITER
My Fellow Writers,
Just about everyone in Hollywood seems unable to pull the trigger and get projects started. Studio production is at a fraction of last year's levels, and I've heard the networks are sticking with more of their current schedules. Everyone's trying to second-guess the public sentiment, and so little is moving forward.
For working writers, it's not a great time. Projects that had just recovered from the potential May writer's strike were thrown into disarray again when September 11th hit. Certainly, the fate of a few movie projects is nothing in comparison to the human tragedies of that day - and the ones that continue around the world.
Nevertheless, the point is that Hollywood is slowed down right now. With the holidays right around the corner, all of the really big executives will be heading off to exotic lands. Sure, they'll make some decisions on network scripts already ordered and things of that nature, but little in the way of new business will be done.
What that means to those writers who don't have a project in development is that it's time to write a spec script. The holidays are perfect for it. You write holiday cards for business contacts, do shopping for family, do your day job, and write on your newest spec project a few hours a day - and as much as possible on weekends. By the time the new year rolls around, you'll be well on your way. And by the time all of the studio moguls return to work at the end of January, you might just have something on your hands.
So don't take the holidays off. This is a working vacation!
Busy little elf,
