My Fellow Writers,
Happy New Year! Rather than send in another holiday column late, I figured I'd just come in with a short note. But one that goes right to the core of writing.
Make only one New Year's resolution this year: Write every day, at least an hour a day. No matter what. Then do it, every day, whatever it takes. Before breakfast, at lunchtime during work, late at night before you go to bed -- get it done. It's the way to actually remind yourself every day that you're a writer. And soon, you'll find yourself actually getting work done.
It's the way that I really started my career. I eventually wrote over 1,000 straight days, through flu, vacation, job, holidays, and everything else -- before finally stopping on purpose for a few days at the end of 1999. Now, it's just a habit like eating breakfast. Don't think about your streak, though. Just take it one day at a time, and the streak will build itself.
You'll be amazed how that one hour will slowly change your life. Soon, you might just find yourself writing MANY hours a day -- for money!
Good luck -- and best wishes for a healthy, happy, joyful, and adventurous New Year.
Resolved,
Grady |
