Dear Friends,

As I sit here at 10:30 p.m. at the end of a wall-to-wall day of writing, the only thing I can think is that I don't want to write any more scenes tonight. In fact, my fingers are rebelling off of the keyboard, hoping that I'll stop typing sometime before midnight.

If you love writing, don't just dabble in it. Because I'm working - and lots of writers like me are working - from sun-up to sundown. We're fighting every hour of every day to get projects ready, and to get projects made. You see bad stuff on television and movies and you think that it must be easy, but it's not. There are a hell of a lot of great writers who are in line in front of you.

I'm not writing this to scare you, but to inspire you, and perhaps provide a bit of a reality check. If you can't possibly do anything else but write, then keep writing. But if you find yourself dabbling, then save yourself the trouble - get out as soon as you can. Go do something in which it's easier to make money. Like playing roulette professionally. Because writing is certainly not for those who aren't fully committed - and maybe even a little bit crazy.

Look, if you love it, it's the greatest job in the world. Even then, it's not always a picnic by any stretch. Even when you win an assignment, you'll most often have producers, executives, actors, investors, assistants, agents, lawyers, and managers telling you about their vision for the script. Would I do anything else? Not a chance in hell. I'm simply no good for anything else.

All right, my fingers have officially won the argument. I'm off to sleep so that I can do it all over again tomorrow. Write hard, write often.
