INDEX, PAGE 1 OF 4
Dear Friends,
A number of people have contacted me in the past asking for the date of a particular column, since they're not listed by subject. Well, I've finally put together an index of the columns. It's about four pages long, so I'll present it in four sections, starting with the oldest columns first. Also, you'll have to forgive me for formatting strangeness, as the column interface doesn't make it easy to format things perfectly. Here goes:
Index 1: 1/9/01 - 5/15/01
Tuesday, January 09, 2001: HOW TO START YOUR WRITING CAREER TODAY The inaugural column, with the single most important tip on screenwriting. Tuesday, January 16, 2001: THE BIGGEST MISTAKE NOVICES MAKE IN SUBMITTING THEIR SCRIPTS Don't submit a script until you read this column Tuesday, January 23, 2001: GOOD READERS ARE HARD TO FIND Greats tips on how to give constructive criticism on scripts and analyze your own. Tuesday, January 30, 2001: HOW DOES A READER "COVER" A SCRIPT? Inside tips on how script readers work. Monday, March 05, 2001: BUILDING YOUR CAREER More thoughts on getting started in writing. Tuesday, March 13, 2001: THE CRAFT OF SCREENWRITING Just what is "screenwriting" anyway? Wednesday, March 21, 2001: HOW TO BE A HACK, PART ONE The most common mistakes of writers. Tuesday, April 03, 2001: HACKING OUT A STORY Tips on story. Tuesday, April 10, 2001: BRINGING CHARACTERS TO LIFE (Or, at least avoiding dead ones) Characterization tips. Tuesday, April 17, 2001: WRITING GREAT DIALOGUE (OR AVOIDING THE WORST OF IT) The core of the best dialogue. Tuesday, April 24, 2001: [UNTITLED] A quick story from the trenches of working on a series. Tuesday, May 01, 2001: Don't Try to Sell Mittens to a Man With No Arms Picking the right script for the job. Tuesday, May 08, 2001: Ding-dong the Strike is Dead The writers' duty in collaboration. Tuesday, May 15, 2001: Don't Ever Let These Words Describe Your Script Ways that studio readers pass on scripts.
As indicted, the index will continue next week. Out of this first batch, I'd recommend checking out the first and second columns, as well as the ones dated January 30th, February 21st, and May 15th. Not that others don't have some good advice, but those cover some ground about readers that I haven't covered in a while.
Summarizing,
