HOW TO DECIDE IF YOUR FILM IS REALLY A PLAY
We have all seen plays transformed into terrific films, but sometimes a play should remain just that. I was reminded of this when a screenwriter friend of mine sent me his script and asked me my opinion. Generally I don't like to read my friends work, but his idea sounded too good to pass up. When I got the script I noticed that the scenes primarily happened in two interiors and most of the dialogue was between the two main characters. In fact there was only one exterior shot and it could have easily been an INT. His story was a wondeful play hiding in a script format. When I told my friend what I thought he reluctantly agreed and dumped the whole project because he was sure it would be harder to get a play produced than a movie. I am happy to say something must have changed his mind. He recently sent me the brochure of his play which was produced by his local theater group to very good reviews. My friend has now moved to New York City where I am sure he will find a receptive audience. |
