USE WHATEVER MOTIVATES YOU TO KEEP WRITING
When I was six years old I had a scary incident in the deep end of our community pool. The lifeguard, a very nasty guy, rescued me. This so and so told my older sister I would never learn to swim and she shouldn't bring me to the pool again. Needless to say, I became a championship swimmer. Saying I couldn't do it motivated me to success. The lessons learned early in life seem to carry us. As I began my writing career, a relative, also a very nasty negative type, gave me dozens of reasons why I would never make it as a writer. Her self assured proclaimation of the odds against me rang with such authority that I suspect she harbored dreams of being a writer, but fear kept her from pursuing it. Everytime I find myself procrastinating I remind myself of this relative and that gives me the motivation I need. With each sale and every option I derive a sense of accomplishment. However; her look of displeasure at my success is a continuing source of motivation. Do it for yourself first, but if you have trouble facing that blank page remind yourself of every agent, producer, manager, or whoever, who said you couldn't then keep writing. Someday you will prove to them that you did. |
