DON'T KEEP REWRITING - SUBMIT THAT SCRIPT
A friend of mine won the St. Louis Film Festival screenwriting award this year and one of the judges is also a producer of some note. The contest only requested the first thirty pages of the script, so my friend had a knockout beginning, and the producer was duly impressed. The producer told my friend (let's call him Jon, since his name is Jon) as soon as he completed the spec to send it to him and he would take it to the studio he has a deal set up with for consideration. Jon has the story all mapped out, he has a beginning, a middle and an end. He has the characters and the plot, in other words he's there, and he's finished. BUT he keeps rewriting! I think he is in his sixth or seventh rewrite. Unfortunately, producers have short memories, and they do move on to other projects, and studio deals come and go, and financing dries up, etc. etc. So the moral of the story is--if someone is interested, polish until it shines and then put it in the mail. No one can say yes until you give them the chance. |
