SEMINARS, CONFERENCES, CLASSES, OH MY!
If you've ever seen a screenwriting magazine you've seen page after page of ads for scriptwriting gurus offering intensive weekend study programs and classes. And there seems to be a seminar or conference held every week in some part of the country promising to turn out the next William Goldman or Kevin Smith. My advise is to go to as many as you can afford. If you have scrimp and save and can only attend a few a year do it. Ask any scriptwriter you know or anyone who knows them for recommendations. Write a letter to the script magazines you subscribe to and ask for their readers recommendations on which conference to choose, but by all means attend as often as you can and as many as you can find. My goal when attending a conference is to come away with new contacts and to have learned at least one new thing I can put to use immediately. I have met some of my best friends at conferences and like they say in the commerical--that's priceless. |
