FINDING THE STORY
So you have this great idea about a good looking high school jock (say Chris Klein) who is all hot and bothered over a pretty cheerleader and then all manner of high jinx follows. You get excited and tell your friends,family or anyone else who will listen and they all hate the idea. SO WHAT. They aren't the people you're going to submit it to and they aren't going to write the check. Even though your best friend may be able to quote all three SCREAM movies that doesn't make him a studio executive. In fact I don't know what make someone qualified to be a studio executive, and obviously based on the short job terms neither do the studios. So if your jock loves cheerleader story is absolutely the one you want to tell--GO FOR IT. Who knows yo may be the one to reignite the genre.
