DO WE REALLY NEED ALL THIS MAYHEM? (Spoiler ALERT - HANNIBAL movie disclosures) I was one of the fans looking forward to the newest film in the HANNIBAL LECTER series. I too was curious to see how in the world they would replace Jodi Foster? Very nicely with Julianne Moore. Well I saw the film and when I say I am no prude or even an anti-violence band wagon rider. PULP FICTION in my opinion is a masterpiece. However; I was put off by the level of blood letting and perversity in Hannibal. Sure Hannibal had to kill off the street guy who stalked him, but did he have to knife him in the balls? Didn't the poor inspector deserve better than hanging and hanging out? When movies like Hannibal come out they raise the bar for future blood and gore films. The problem is: most films won't be as well made or as well written and certainly not as well acted. We will be treated to bloodier sicker wannabees. To what end? At some point someone is going to have to start writing films of substance that are funny or sad or even scary, but not for the sake of gross out humor, or manipulative tear jerks, or 'the cat that jumps on the trash can lid' scary moments, but because we are writers and we can meet the challenge. When the bar is raised to films of excellence such as --AS GOOD AS IT GETS - or funny screwball movies such as AIRPLANE - or sweet romances - WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, let all of us endeavor to make the next script exceed the norm and excell. |
