WHY DO AGENTS PLAY HARD TO GET? Over the years I have had a few agents. Ex-agents are sort of like ex-husbands(wives.) The relationship is similar, as is the break up. Once upon a time we were wildly in love, over time we became indifferent, finally at the end we just didn't want to talk to each other ever again. Why? Neither of us fulfilled the other's expectations. My agent thought I should eventually graduate from television movies. But I was happy writing small, character driven, true stories about people I met and found interesting. Suppose someone told Susan Grant not to write about Erin Brockovich--Julia wouldn't have an Oscar! So we split up. No hard feelings. My next agent really wanted to be an A-List Top Dog. All he could say was "high concept" or "special effects," and "gemme something I can take to Brad, Tom or Heath." Bad match there. Sure agents are looking for the blockbuster, the cheap to produce but makes multi-millions indy. I am sure they are out there. I just don't write them. I hope you do, because if you do, you'll find agents knocking on your door. If you don't, do not give up. Remember for every PLANET OF THE APES there's a small movie about real people that is sure to connect--FULL MONTY anyone? |
