Where do ideas come from? Good question. Chris Carter, creator of The X-Files, once said in an interview that all the good ideas for stories have already been thought of and created at one time or another. Meaning, nothing is truly original when it comes to concepts. I totally agree with his point of view. And believe me, it will save you a tremendous amount of time knowing that you don't have to come up with the next, Hollywood concept to break into the business.
So if all the good ideas have already been used, what's left? Simple. Our voice. Our unique and powerful voice telling a new version of an old story. See, that's what being a screenwriter is all about; knowing how to tell a fantastic story in a new and interesting way. That's our job. So go to the library, or your bookshelf, grab your favorite novel. Then sit down and think about how you can re-tell the same story using different characters and situations. More importantly, figure out how to tell that story in a fantastically new and interesting way. Then crank up the computer and start working on the next great, Hollywood screenplay.
It's all downhill from here. |
