Screenwriting is a difficult business to break into. And once you do, most of the money goes to other people. So don't believe in the fantasy that you're going to get rich writing movies. Do it because you love it.
Over the next few months, I'm going to document my progress as I attempt to break in to the industry using any and all tools available.
Right now I have three spec scripts that are very near to a polish. Actually, one of them is already polished. That one's my sports drama. The second one, my supernatural thriller, I'm currently polishing. And the last one, my high-concept drama, needs a page one rewrite.
I know that my sports drama is my hot property right now. So I have to be very selective about who I show it to first. Meanwhile, my manager is going through some personal issues right now so I'm basically on my own.
Do I have contacts? You bet your ass. Am I a good phone person? Not. I sound either retarded or drunk. Sometimes both. So that leaves me up a creek. Luckily, one of my girlfriends is the host of one of those extreme sports shows. She has a way with people, on the phone and in person.
So I'm going to ask her to make probably the most important phone call in my fledgling career as a screenwriter. The phone call that will follow up on a major contact in Hollywood, Steven Soderbergh. She's going to pitch my sports drama to a big player, one of the biggest.
Wish me luck. |
