Most screenwriters don't consider the sellibility of the genre they're going to write. The genre is the type of movie we are watching such as comedy, adventure or drama. There are genres that are easier to sell. Others that are more difficult, and still others which are the toughest sell of all. My suggestion is to look over the list below before you begin writing your next screenplay. That way you can pick from the genres that buyers are looking for and which will have the highest probability that you will sell it.
Easiest Genres To Sell:
Action Adventure Comedy and Romantic Comedy Thrillers
More Difficult To Sell:
Drama Sci Fi Fantasy Horror
Most Difficult Genres To Sell:
Period Pieces Westerns Musicals
This doesn't mean genres at the bottom of the list won't sell. Occasionally they do. But not very often on spec. Mostly they're from studio commissioned writers with credits.
