The last time the Writer's Guild of America went on strike was 1988. The strike lasted over 5 months and paralyzed Hollywood. If the union doesn't reach an agreement with the studios, a strike is scheduled for May 1, 2001. The strike will have implications for you whether you're a member of the union or not. If you are a member, you can't take pitch meetings, are forbidden to work on rewrite assignments and you can't negotiate any new deals. If you're not a member of the Guild, you should market your screenplay now and try to sell it before the strike. The studios are acquiring many more projects in anticipation of the strike. Also the spec screenplay market was inundated with scripts for months after the strike ended by writer's who had nothing else to do but write specs. So if the strike comes, avoid putting your material out there for 3 to 4 months after the strike is over. |
