THE BIGGEST MISTAKE WRITERS MAKE
I've already spoken about writer's too often starting out with material that appeals only to them and which has a weak premise. Writers are also way too paranoid about sending out their material for fear that someone is going to steal it. The first hat they must wear is that of the creator of the material which they can do without a problem. The other hat writers must wear is aggressively marketing their material. That means registering their projects with the Writer's Guild of America, then sending it to anyone and everyone who is willing to read it. The saying in Hollwood is that "you're not going to get screwed by people stealing from you. You're going to get screwed by people making a deal with you." It's alot easier for studios and production companies to purchase what they're interested in and underpay the writer rather than steal material and risk lawsuits and bad publicity. |
