MARKET UPDATE: WHAT'S HOT IN THE SCRIPT WORLD
Short, but I hope helpful, column this week.
I'm hitting about 25 meetings this week with major producers who have studio deals. In brief, here are the trends I'm seeing:
--Comedy is hot again. This is often the first genre out of their mouths when asked what they're looking for. Romantic comedies seem played out, but there's interest for broad comedies, smart comedies, low budget comedies.
--Horror and thriller seem to be the ever-hot genres. Horror gets mentioned even more frequently, it seems. There are a lot of horror pics coming from major studios, so this seems to be driving the market for more, more, more (typical studio herd mentality, but good news for horror writers!).
--Teen angst is out. College angst is out. Mob pictures feel a bit over-done.
--This summer has been a disappointing one for studios and their megaplex-clogging "tentpole" movies. Mixed message on what this means. Some think it'll revive smaller budget pictures a bit, others think budgets will go higher (beyond $250 million) to support the "bigger must be better" theory.
--The average price of a Hollywood movie is now $80 million.
--The Hollywood beast must be fed! Times are tight, money is in short supply and so on, but producers must still produce movies. Every day, hundreds of people make it their business to find the undiscovered writer, to locate the unheralded script, to find the basis of another movie. Help these people do their jobs by writing great scripts, then making them aware the script exist.
More later.
Keep writing.
