My POV Brian A. Wilson
GET AN EDUCATION FROM YOUR DVDs
One of the many great aspects of being a writer is what passes for work.
For instance, consider yourself working and studying as you go to your living room, select your favorite DVD and pop it in.
There's an unbelievable amount of information packed in your DVDs, and much to be learned from them.
Start by watching with the sound down. This takes away the (gigantic) influence of dialogue, music, sound effects and so on. Now you can just watch the "moving pictures" that another writer had in his/her head many months ago.
Watch the movie and imagine you wrote it.
Would your scenes be too long? How would you have described the room, the period, the location? How few words would you use to describe the action?
Now click over to the chapter headings of the DVD. Read the chapter titles. These are mini-outlines of the greatest movies ever made. These are Cliff's Notes to your favorite motion pictures.
What would the chapter titles be on the DVD of your script?
When you've got that figured out, you've got the "long version" pitch of your movie figured out as well.
Go grab a DVD. You've got work to do.
Keep writing. BW LA |
