I recently had a computer crash (which is why I haven't posted in the last few weeks). We've all experienced that frustration-but it got me thinking about writing tools. Word processing has been a boon to writers. Add on screenplay software, and the job of getting "black on white" is easier still.
Shakespeare, by contrast, wrote some of the world's great plays with a quill pen. I have to admit-there are times I prefer to use a pen instead of the word processor. When free associating, making random notes, or "brainstorming," I prefer using a notebook and pen. Sometimes if I'm blocked, I abandon the computer and revert to pen and paper. There's an organic wholeness that sometimes improves the flow.
I also find I can write just about anywhere-restaurants, lobbies, airports. But again, I prefer paper and pen to working on a laptop computer in such environments. Others may find the opposite true.
Take time to experiment with your own writing tools, habits and locations. When you're totally blocked, consider making a radical change. While we can't get by without our computers, there are circumstances when more primitive means serve the purpose. |
