By now, you've removed your party hat and tossed the noise maker in the trash. And so far, we're probably still on track with the New Year resolutions.
Mine was to clean my disheveled office. In doing so, I came across a quote I like and saved for inspiration. It's from Sir Joshua Reynolds and goes like this:
"There is no expedient to which a man will not resort to avoid the real labor of thinking."
I've always thought that by substituting the word "writing" for "thinking," it describes the lengths we go to avoid the real labor of writing. The procrastination. The feelings of inadequacy. The minutia of daily life.
My greeting for 2004 is that you'll overcome the urge to avoid the "real labor of writing." By next year, you'll be amazed at what you've accomplished. |
