In his book, On Writing Well, William Zinnser states: "Ultimately the product that any writer has to sell is not his subject, but who he is..."
A strong endorsement for writing well on what you are passionate about rather than a contrived script on a topic you think is the trendy, flavor of the day. Yes, screenplays need to be saleable. But everyone agrees the first requirement of a saleable script is vivid writing that leaps off the page. Characters with depth that enter into conflict with equally well-drawn foes.
This comes from the gut-not a contrived notion of what your "product" should be. Your script must reflect your unique perspective and passion. Only you can write that script in your distinctive voice. Ultimately, you and only you, is what makes your subject, whatever it may be, compelling. |
