Ever write a play and one day realize it might work better as a movie? First thing to do is think about how you'll "open it up". Plays typically take place in only a few locations-some only in one. In general, a film in a single location becomes claustrophobic.

You might start the transformation by brainstorming how scenes can be set in locations that are cinematic-on a crowded city street, in a bus terminal, at a restaurant, on a sailboat. Consider new material you might write. Think of moments that might be totally visual in content-something that's not on the page in your play but would be telling in a screenplay.

Once you've explored such options, turn your attention to revising the scenes accordingly-or creating new ones. And while you're at it, look for ways to cut down on the dialogue. Plays tend to be more talk than films, which are more action.
