Originally this blog focused on corporate media writing opportunities as a means of gaining experience and writing credits while working on your spec scripts. Then I veered off into thoughts about screen and play writing. In the spirit of the initial focus, however, this week describes a writer's market you probably never considered: scripting media for museum installations.
If you live in any medium to large city in the states, you'll find museums dedicated to everything from local history to science or rock and roll. Typically, these museums feature rotating exhibits. Such exhibits often feature films and interactive kiosks. In fact, I'm currently researching and writing a series of interactive stories for a Jewish Heritage museum. The research is fascinating; the writing challenging. It offers an opportunity to stretch my writing muscles.
To seek out such work, identify curators of museums in your local area. Find out the companies they use to create new exhibits. Many firms specialize in museum installations. Get your portfolio in front of the decision-makers who contract such work to freelancers. Let them know of your writing credits and interest in getting on their "A" list of writers. Offer to write a short sample assignment to prove your ability and sincerity in devoting time to such endeavors.
While you won't get rich, the pay is good and it beats waiting tables or sorting mail.
