I know, with the political season reaching fever pitch, everyone's skins are wearing a bit thin. But let's look beyond politics and see how things that make you mad, sad or hopeful and joyous can serve as fodder for screenplays.
When casting about for subjects for your work, consider "what gets under your skin". Explore issues you feel passionate about. Use a villain to challenge your core belief. Step into another's shoes and view things through the prism of their eyes. See if dramatic conflict develops.
Do some research. Interview people who've been in the situation you want to depict. Seek out professionals in the field. Explore the time period or setting. If it's an exotic place, squirrel away some dough to travel there and experience the atmosphere for yourself. This is exactly what Joshua Marston did to write "Maria Full of Grace".
If the urge to write finally overwhelms you-you've got a story to tell. So don't just complain-turn your madness, sadness or despair into a screenplay. |
