Several decades ago there was a film by this title. It captures the stubborn determination of a marathon runner in training. Sometimes, this phrase comes to mind when mired in the process of writing a script.
That, too, takes stubborn determination. Only I can put forth the effort to slog through it. Occasionally, there is the runner's high where inspiration makes a mile or two fly by. More often, however, it is simply grinding out the miles-going over familiar territory in seemingly endless revisions. And, it is lonely.
What keeps us going? Every writer is motivated by something different. But in the end, there must be a compelling drive to succeed. It is not always easy to maintain belief in the work-just as the runner must certainly have doubts about running a good, smart race. Sometimes the finish line seems elusive.
In the end, however, only by focusing on the work itself is the goal attained. By placing one foot in front of the other, day after day. To bear in mind that this is not a sprint, but a marathon.
Keep running. |
