What this country needs: a new Norman Lear to create an Archie Bunker of the pro-war, pro-life, anti-Darwin religious right. Of course, finding a network with the spunk to flaunt the FCC and their own mega-corporate ownership to air it is step two.
For those too young to remember this late 60s/early 70s classic, Archie personified the racial bigotry, anti-youth, pro-Vietnam War working-class thinking of the moment. By contrast, his ditzy wife, Edith, often displayed the wisdom of Solomon dispensed with a Brooklyn accent. The conflict derived from Rob Reiner's antiwar, long-haired son-in-law married to Archie's hot daughter, the apple of his eye.
Smartly written, the tight ensemble cast performed like a fine jazz quartet. Most amazing-it became one of the most popular shows of its era.
In today's chilling, politically correct, neocon, religious right atmosphere, it is impossible to imagine a second coming. (Pardon, I'm wearing my politics on my sleeve.)
If anyone out there thinks he can do it, please step up to the plate. (I know the sentence is sexist, but I would betray my theme to use he/she.) The country needs you.
