I'm not positive it's true, but I recently heard that in deference to the need for kids to eat healthier and wiser, Cookie Monster is an endangered species on Sesame Street. The lovable cookie glutton is victim to gastronomical correctness.
The character's charm derives from his obsession with sweet round things which he devours with unbridled gusto.
So what are your characters' obsessions and excesses? While not all characters need to exhibit such traits, they add flavor (pun intended) and fullness. Think of Kojak without sucking on a lollipop; Monk without phobias; Columbo without his rumpled trench coat, half-smoked cigar and jalopy.
To create memorable characters, ask what they obsess about then make it visible to the audience. |
