Randy Travis wrote a song called "Heroes & Friends". The refrain goes: "Your heroes will help you find good in yourself... Your friends won't forsake you for someone else."
Writers need both.
Who are the heroes that inspire your writing? Your favorite screenwriters. Movies you obsess over because you admire them so much. Actors and actresses whose performances electrify you. Directors whose work you follow closely. In today's era of celebrity idolization, don't go just for glitter and gold. Choose your heroes wisely. When you need inspiration, you'll have a deep well to draw on.
Friends: While trying to make a living as a writer entails networking and schmoozing don't confuse that with friendship. If your only friends are those you think can help your career, your well is dry. Sometimes it takes misfortune to discover who your true friends are. Know those who won't forsake you in times of need. Make sure to honor them in return.
Taken together, heroes and friends can be your best inspiration to find the best in yourself-as a writer. As a "mensch".
Sorry for the lecture, but I really like the song. |
