Recently, I heard a radio interview with a writer whose book bemoans the loss of play in our society-especially among kids. The causes are many. Although kids spend hours playing computer games, they're not challenged to create their own games or enter imaginary worlds of their own invention.
Taboos: Some planned communities actually forbid kids from writing on sidewalks with chalk. How can you play hop-scotch? You might say: "what about all the soccer games and Pee Wee football?" All organized and structured by adults. The rules are prescribed. It's highly competitive with winners and losers.
Play is essential to the creative process. Yet our kids may be growing up play deprived. That's not good for appreciating and participating in all art forms. So whether you're a mom, an uncle or just know some kids in your neighborhood-see what you can do to get them excited about genuine play.
While you're at it-don't sublimate your own playfulness. It's the wellspring for your creativity as a writer. |
