I've talked about bad guys before, but I can't emphasize enough the importance of having an antagonist that is a worthy opponent to your main character.
And I'm not talking action heroes who fight off monsters. The meekest or most ordinary protagonist needs to have a worthy opponent, specifically, someone who is making his life miserable. Someone we can root against.
Think Reese Witherspoon in "Election." She was a senior in high school. Matthew Broderick was her teacher. She made life hell for him and it was fun watching him deal with her and try to combat her. Same with Bill Murray in "Rushmore." He too had a teenage nemesis and watching them go at each other was compelling.
Check out the movies you'll be watching over the next couple of weeks and see how bad the bad guy is. |
