Whether you're going to write a short script, say under ten minutes, something slightly longer, say under thirty minutes or a full-length, you still have to find a good story to tell, preferably a story that you're excited about writing.

Some have a clear cut idea, something they've had in their head for weeks or months and they're ready to write it. Others have several ideas (or a bunch) and the problem is trying to figure out which one to write.

If you fall into the latter category, one way to nail down the idea you're going to write is to spend some time them. It's kind of like dating. You're interested in a few people and they all seem nice, but until you have a few conversations, go on a date or have coffee a couple of times, you're not going to know if she/he is right for you.

Ideas are like that. How do you get to know your ideas better? Make a beat sheet or cause and effect outline. It doesn't have to be long. Figure out what the Instigating Event is, the Major Dramatic Question, what your main character wants, what his obstacles are. Things like that. Pick four or five of your ideas and do this. Then think about them. Run each storyline through your head.

One will start to germinate and rise to the surface. That's the one you write.
