"Hard Candy" was released theatrically last Spring and it's available on DVD. This is a disturbing film because of its subject matter, but it's an amazing example of a movie that works with essentially one set and two characters.
Other than three or four introductory scenes to set up the rest of the movie, the whole thing takes place in a house in the Hollywood Hills. Living room, kitchen, bedroom. Lots of conversation. Lots of dialogue. But very good dialogue.
If you don't know the premise, it's basically that 32-year-old man is in a chat room with a 14-year-old girl and they agree to meet. He may or may not be a pedophile and he may or may not be a murdered. But as the story unfolds we see that the girl isn't what she seems.
So the filmmakers took a sensational situation, wrapped a compelling story around it, had very good dialogue, superb acting and made a smart film that's so good it should be a textbook case in any film school.
Rent it. You'll see what I mean.
