Stephen Berger has been a professional screenwriter for over ten years. He has sold screenplays to major studios, had scripts produced, and taught screenwriting at the UCLA Extension Writer's Program. Currently his feature script "The Belle" is set to be directed by Jay Russell (My Dog Skip) at Warner Brothers. Stephen also teaches the PowerWriting Seminar, the first "motivational" screenwriting seminar on the market, using techniques of management training and sports psychology to maximize a writer's potential, both creatively and business-wise (for more information call (310) 967-1385.) Each week in this column, Stephen will look at screenwriting from a writer- centered viewpoint. He'll take the focus away from abstract theory and structure, and instead aim it directly at the writer's mind: what makes it tick, from working habits to creative processes to fears and beliefs about the practice of screenwriting. Instead of focusing on what all "good" screenplays have in common, he'll explore how you, as a writer, can improve your writing, your mind-set, your work habits, and many other issues. You can think of this approach as "motivational screenwriting," zeroing in on the very things that separate the pros from mere screenwriting hobbyists.
