Unless you're writing something like Boogie Nights where sex scenes are integral to the story, be careful. In an era where porn (both hardcore and soft) can be gotten straight from TV or the Internet, sex scenes in mainstream movies may only accomplish one thing: slow down the dramatic tension of the plot.
In the past, say starting with Easy Rider Midnight Cowboy in the late Sixties, where sex scenes were actually nude scenes, there would be a snippet of flesh or naked bodies writing and that would be it. Jon Voight and Sylvia Miles rolling around on her bed was pretty shocking in 1969.
Other films of the Seventies and Eighties pushed the envelope a little further by having major female stars bare breasts and butts and do "nude" scenes.
For most moviegoers of that era it was probably titillating to see movie stars naked or semi-naked, especially if the scene was erotically directed and acted.
But now, my guess is a large percentage of the moviegoing audience (especially males) is desensitized to sex scenes or nude scenes because of the aforementioned easy access of porn right in our own living rooms. And women might find the scenes boring unless they're romantic or tastefully done.
Sooooo...if you're determined to have your two lead characters have a steamy sex scene (of if the people making your movie insist upon it) do it. But it just might diminish the forward motion of your story.
Simply put, be careful of gratuitious sex. Most of it is laughable when one reads it.
