I just finished a great book about a great screenwriter (and novelist, short story writer, essayist and personality) named Terry Southern.
Does the name ring a bell? I'll give you two hints: Dr. Strangelove and Easy Rider. He was probably most famous for the novels Candy and The Magic Christian (which both became films).
Terry Southern was an early influence of mine, both as a writer and person. When I was in college and then just starting out to find my identity as a writer, I devoured everything I could by Mr. Southern.
The book is called A GRAND GUY: The Art and Life of Terry Southern written by Lee Hill published by Harper Collins. It's the biography of a man who hung out and worked with most of the great artists of the 50s and 60s like Stanley Kubrick, Lenny Bruce, Peter Sellers and anybody who was cool and hip back then.
I could probably write a few thousand words about this wonderful book, but I'd rather you spend your time reading it than me this week.
Run out and get this. It'll make you laugh and cry and feel proud to be in the same professor as Terry Southern.
Enjoy! |
