Usually, whatever we put down after the initial Fade In is chenged. Maybe the first half page or maybe even the first couple of pages. And usually, whatever the last scene is or the last couple of scenes are before we type in The End, get changed too.
Many times I've read first drafts where somebody will say "I hate the ending" or "My ending sucks." I always say so what?
A very simple rule to remember is this: whatever it takes to get started--no matter how awful or cheesy or stupid--and whatever it takes to get to the end--no matter how unsatisfying or nonsensical or dumb--it's irrelevant.
The objectives of writing a screenplay or anything is to start and finish. Do whatever you have to do to accomplish that. Your beginning will be easier to rewrite once you know how your story ends. And your ending will be easier to fix once you've had a chance to go over the entire manuscript.
But if you never get started because you don't feel right about how to begin your script and if you take forever to complete a first draft because you're not comfortable with your ending, you're wasting precious time.
Type in whatever crappy scene or dialogue on Page 1 to get moving and type in whatever crappy stuff you have at the end, to finish.
Then let the real work begin.
