How "smart" a script is could mean the difference between a sale and a NO THANKS. What does "smart" mean? A producer I know uses the word a lot. He uses the word to describe the last pass he (and the writer he's working with) takes on a screenplay before sending it out to the studios, stars or directors.
And what he means is this: are there any scenes that go on too long by a sentence or stage directions that are too verbose? Are there plot points that seemed so cool that might be too cool or not cool enough? Are there lines that might be a little too precious. If it's a comedy are the lines worthy of a feature film or are they a tad too sit-comy?
I think it's smart (and professional) to give your script an injection of smart by making one final pass before sending it out. It may only be a few lines here and there, but it'll definitely make it better.
