The understanding is that the "industry" shuts down from roughly the middle of December to, well, now.
Maybe starting Monday of this week the agents, producers, development people, creative executives and studio decision-makers turned their computers back on and the process of deciding which scripts to buy, develop and make gets rolling again.
This is alright by me. I like fresh starts and new beginnings, especially at the start of the year. I seldom do much work in December because of vacation and the holidays and I welcome the new year with a new sense of purpose and aggressiveness. I feel ready to take on the powers that be by finishing something new or going back to something I put aside or starting to think out a new idea.
It's also a matter of viewing the end of the year as a time of overeating and drinking too much during the holidays, then starting a diet and exercising in January.
If you're looking for renewell now that 2003 is here, trying taking a look at the idea you loved so much last April, but couldn't make work because you were preoccupied with that tricky third act in another script. Or pull out the first draft of that comedy that wasn't exactly funny enough or romantic enough. Give it another look now that it's a new year.
Try it. You might be surprised.
