They Might Be Worth Building A Story Around!
I know a guy who went to jail for murdering his wife. I know a woman who was raped. I know two women who were molested by their fathers. I know a woman who's father impregnated her. And she gave birth to the baby herself in her room. And the baby died. And she hid the body in her closet.
Creepy and sad. But all part of my life experience. Sometimes when you have bland characters without shadings and contours it's helpful to look into your own life and look for the darkness.
The above examples are extreme, sure, but they're real. Whenever I have trouble making a character (big or small) more interesting I think of these and other people I've encounter. People with real problems and heartache in their lives.
Try it. It really helps flesh out a character or two.
