ARE YOU CHEAP OR DEEP?
Do you substitute cheap emotion for deep emotion? If you're writing dumb comedies instead of scripts with intelligence and wit, you might be perceived as a hack. You might make a lot of money writing stupid stuff, but you may not get much respect.
That's not to say that you can't write an incredibly commercial script that's also got some depth.
I think depth scares Hollywood. I think that in most cases they're afraid that audiences are intimidated by death. So screenwriters are backed into that horrible corner where they have to dumb down their clever stories with the unpredictable twists and turns. If they don't some other writer will be hired to do it for them. And that writer will probably make it worse. So the original writer does what he's told and his inspired script is now trite.
I'm here today to say that you should aim for the deep emotion and hope it gets through, rather than going for the cheap stuff first time around.
It'll be more fun for you and you'll have your self respect. |
