All these cliches I've heard over the years are pretty much true, especially those having to do with getting what you want. Like "He who asks gets" and "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." The wisdom of these maxims is that they're true. If you're by nature someone who has a healthy sense of entitlement, asking for what you want probably comes easy (or easier).
But if you're shy and not especially pushy or aggressive, asking for something or squeaking (roughly translated, being a pain in the ass) will be difficult. This could be a problem for you. You have to learn how to not be intimidated by rejection. By agents and producers and development people who won't acknowledge your letters or e-mails. I'm not saying you should take a class in Being Obnoxious, but you probably should start taking baby steps into the world of not being afraid to find your inner sense of entitlement.
The first few times you ask for something it's difficult. Guess what. It doesn't get easier, especially if it's not in your nature. But once you get at least a little confident about asking, you'll find that some times asking for what you want is less hard. |
