I can't remember where I heard it and I'm not sure who said it, but I know it was a famous novelist. Basically he said that every writer ultimately writes about his experiences from his youth, specifically before the age of 25.

I don't know how true or typical that is, but I do believe that there's something to be said for looking backward. If you have a good memory you might remember a person or event or something that might trigger a story.
