One of the first tings I learned as a writer was the concept of the "wave movement." If you don't know what it is, just remember what it's like to sit on a beach and watch the waves.
A wave appears on the horizon. It builds slowly, then peters out. Another wave builds a little further as it moves towards shore, then peters out.
The best waves, no matter how big or small, keep building and building and building and building and come crashing to shore.
That's what a story has to be like. Whether it's an action thriller or a talkie, cerebral drama. Start small and build, build, build with a resounding crash to the shore. |
