Some stories aren't really stories at all. They're just anecdotes. "We found this great Mexican restaurants with cheap margaritas and hot waitresses and we made friends with the owner and he said because we all liked the Yankees any time we came in we would get one round of free drinks."
That's an anecdote. Most of us experience this type of thing all the time. Maybe not every day. Maybe every day, depending on your lifestyle and where you live and your personality and how alert you are to experiences.
If something happens to you that you feel is interesting enough to tell your significant other/best friend/co-worker/whoever it may only be a good anecdote or a funny story or weird little slice of life.
This is the mistake lots of screenwriters make when they embark on a new script. The story they want to tell is really just an anecdote. It might be interesting or entertaining or both, but it just doesn't have the weight to make it into a fully realized screenplay.
Save yourself time and creative energy. Make sure your next idea is big enough. If it's not, file it away. You might be able to use it as a sub plot. |
